New York From the Air

Book Design

Challenge

New York is one of the world’s most photographed cities—curated books covering all aspects of architecture and daily life abound. When Rizzoli, a prestigious international publisher headquartered in NYC, asked us to partner on Paul Seibert’s latest photography project, we knew our challenge would lie in creating a visual narrative that truly stands out.

Solution

Photographer Paul Seibert is an experienced aerial photographer known for capturing New York from above via helicopter. We incorporated graphics from helicopter routes and maps throughout the book to provide a deeper context for this unique perspective. From start to finish, we organized Seibert’s stunning imagery in seasonal order, and from dawn to dusk to provide an overarching narrative experience for the reader.

An overhead photo taken of the double-spread index page of the book. A 3D illustrated map of Manhattan is shown in colors purple, green, and teal. On major monuments, there are callouts with their names written in red. The book is lying on a cobalt blue seamless.

Photo showing the red book almost closed but open enough to get a glims of the pattern inside of it. The title NEW YORK FROM THE AIR is printed in cobalt blue foil and the book is resting on the same color seamless.
The book is open to a double spread with bright orange-red text on white ground. In bold large letters, it says FROM THE AIR. The book is photographed against a cobalt blue seamless.

A spread showing three images next to each other. The one on the left shows the top of a skyrise, the one in the middle shows a skyrise with a big Pepsi Cola sign in red, and the photo on the right shows a bridge over water. The three images are all in colors of dark gray, black, and navy.
Overhead photo of the book showing a double spread each with a sunrise photo of a skyrise. The sunrise is showing lavender, orange, yellow, and pink colors and the sky risers are gray metal. The book is lying on a cobalt blue seamless.
Photo showing a close-up of three buildings each with its own texture and color. The first one looks teal, the second light gray, and the third a warm mid-gray.
Overhead photo showing the book open to a double spread of a bridge and a high-rise building. The colors of the two photos are mostly black with light making part of them brighter. The book is lying on a cobalt blue seamless.
