Challenge

Under the artistic direction of Cecilia Alemani, Art Basel Cities Week features ’Hopscotch (Rayuela)’, an inventive, multi-venue exhibition alongside a robust suite of exhibitions, artist talks, and events. Art Basel Cities: Buenos Aires is a multiyear program of initiatives that celebrate the city’s thriving cultural ecosystem. Through a series of long-term professional collaborations, projects, and exchanges, amplifying Buenos Aires’s position as a cultural destination of choice. Art Basel launched a new cities exhibition in Buenos Aires and enlisted YC to design and create branded maps and signage collateral for the week long event.

Curated by Cecilia Alemani, ‘Hopscotch (Rayuela)’ is a journey through Buenos Aires as seen through the eyes of 18 international and Argentine artists. This public exhibition borrows its name and concept from the 1963 experimental novel by Argentine writer Julio Cortázar and from the timeless children’s street game popular in many cultures. Like the nonlinear sequence of the book and game, the exhibition hopscotches through the city, offering numerous possible paths through three neighborhoods. The selected artists have realized artworks in close dialogue with their venues, shaping a multilayered experience that connects visual art, urban spaces, and the city’s histories in unexpected ways.

Solution

YummyColours responded to the need to infuse the map with the textural landscape of Buenos Aires, especially highlighting monuments and unique city elements in a user friendly manner. Using the playful theme of ‘Hopscotch’ as a pillar in the design YC weaved a combination of non linear sequencing and pops of bright color to provide a functional and fun guide to the newest Art Basel city exhibition in Buenos Aires.
